Window Frame Material Instructions

  • For steel window frames use the magnets to attach the insect screen.
  • For all other types of window frames wood, vinyl, aluminum or fiberglass, use the adhesive Y-Hook tape.

Note

  • This is a Do It Yourself (DIY) Project and some of the instructions are based on the best possible assembly method for most common types of windows. This is a worldwide product and all window frames are different. Results will vary.
  • You are free to experiment on your own and come up with better ideas to suit your needs. Submit your designs and we will feature them in our website.

Step 1 - Measure

  1. Measure the length and width of the window frame with a tape measure where the insect screen will be attached. (Remember: measure twice cut once)
  2. Measure all the window openings and write down the measurements on a piece of paper for every window.
IMPORTANT (Add 1cm to each measurement because the screen flexes)

Step 2 - Cut

  1. Spread the insect screen on a flat surface like a table or floor.
  2. With the largest window sizes calculate how many pieces you can cut out from the standard insect screen provided (standard size 1m x 2.1m). This will help you avoid wasting the material once you know how many window pieces you can get out of the whole screen.
  3. Use the scissors/blade to cut out the right size. It should be easy to cut the screen by just following the lines.
REMEMBER. Since the screen flexes add 1cm to the length and width in order to have more room to work with.

Step 3 - Attach

  1. Once cut, make sure the insect screen is the correct size using the tape measure.
  2. Once you have each piece cut out, make sure you measure it against the window opening that it’s supposed to go to.
  3. Position the screen on the window frame and the magnets should stick to the frame and keep the screen in place.

Step 4 - Casement Window With Stays

A casement stay adjuster opens and closes your casement windows so you can let in just the right amount of fresh air.

Because of the adjustment, the stay will protrude inside the window frame, so to get the insect screen to work with it you have to create a slot on it to help with the adjustment of the window stay while using the insect screen.

  1. Measure the position of the stay hooks on the insect screen. Cut a slot 2cm horizontally, wide enough for the stay to be able to pass through.
  2. Cut a slot 2cm vertically wide enough for the stay and hook to be able to pass through.

Test the opening. This will make it easy to fasten it around the stay once you set the window in the open position and adjust the stay while the screen is in place.

5 -Use Y-Hook Tape For Bathroom Windows or All Other Windows

Use the Y-Hook tape on bathroom windows or windows that stay open permanently.

Repeat STEP 1-2

  1. Cut the Y-Hook roll into 1/2 inch squares or 2cm. Cut 6 or 8 at a time. Make sure you have enough pieces to cover all the window screens.
  2. Space the Y-Hook one on each corner and in the middle of the length of the screen.
For best results, have one every 12 inches if possible depending on your window size.
  3. Once you verify the position then peel the backing one by one and attach it to the window frame.
For a more secure bond, push the hook tape with your thumb and let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes.

  • Attach and stretch the screen from the bottom corner going up and also stretch going sideways. Push the screen though with your nails to make sure it latches on to the hooks while you stretch it to the next hook.

Repeat STEP 4 for Casement windows with stays

This will make it easy to attach and take down when you open and close the window.

  • Using a spoon or your nails, run it across the hooks to make sure most of the screen is hooked.

Addition of Step 3 - Attach Metal Clips for a More Easily Adjustable Screen

REMEMBER. This is an optional step if you want to secure the magnets from falling off when removing and reattaching the screen to the window. The metal clip will take a few weeks to magnetize to the same strength as the magnet so initially, it might feel loose.

Use the screen a few days before trying this step in order to get comfortable with the placement.

  1. Mark the position of the magnet on the screen and the location of the edge on the window frame
  2. Insert the magnet at the bottom of the metal clip. Position the open clip + magnet in between the screen where you marked it and clamp down with your fingers. Attach it back to the window and repeat step 5.1 on the opposite end for each magnet you plan on securing.

  • Once satisfied with the position of the magnets, use pliers or force to clamp the metal clip down on the ends where the teeth meet. This permanently secures the magnet to the screen.

Tips & Info

  • Put together the smallest insect screen first to get a good idea on how to put together the rest of the screens.
  • Remember this is a Do It Yourself (DIY) kit and so these instructions work best for standard window openings so you can always adjust and position the magnets to suite your needs.
  • Every window frame is different and some have some obstacles like the adjustable casement stay arm. So make sure to adjust your measurements around it or you can always cut a small slit between the screen to make sure the arm slides through without creating a big gap.
  • You can use glue to permanently attach and seal the edges on bathroom windows that always stay open or mix and match the magnets with the hooks.
